The Wild West of Executive Coaching; Stratford Sherman, Alyssa Freas, November 1st, 2004. Harvard Business Review

Finding a good consultant or advisor can be hard to find, especially in the world of executive coaching.

Executive coaching can be considered a largely ungoverned body, with no watchdog authorities or organizations monitoring the profession, practices, and those who claim to be experts in it. Adding to this, the field is relatively new, having become somewhat more mainstream in the late 80's. Through this, and the nature of the profession, there lacks good anecdotal evidence as to what make someone qualified, reputable, or even effective as an executive coach.

This new industry's popularity is not unwarranted, and needs careful attention. As we move closer to the knowledge worker revolution, people are being harnessed more for their individual qualities as opposed to be simple commodities that they were once considered under industrialist thinking. Be it upper management or individual executives, coaching becomes a necessary part of the help and nourishment to grow leaders business.

Some things that executive coaches might help leaders with is being a sounding board, individual nourishment and development, reducing destructive behaviours, enhancing teamwork, helping set goals, facilitating succession, and managing change. While there's many that are highly motivated to do this, it might take some skilled navigation to really cut through the bunk and find a reliable and effective coach. For many that choose the wrong consultant, it can be more destructive than just wasted money. When dealing with the topics, emotions, behaviours, and organizational issues that are faced in coaching sessions, there's opportunity for many things to happen - both on the side of finding and developing different behaviours, or organizational change that upset other aspects of the organization.

Crucibles of Leadership; Warren G. Bennis, Robert J. Thomas; September 1, 2002, Harvard Business Review

What is a crucible? A crucible is, by definition, a transformative experience through which an individual comes to a new or an altered sense of identity. Often leaders emerge, or are recognized, either by themselves or others when they undergo a crucible. It is an important factor in leadership, similar to a milestone in project management, as it is a defining moment that presents the understanding that a leadership is strong and present within the individual.

This transformation leadership is a topic that cannot be overlooked, and is explained with examples and suggestion in this HBR article.
